Boondocking Tips and Useful Hacks

Highline Self, RV and Boat Storage

Sometimes, people get the urge to escape from the everyday pressures caused by living in the middle of a bustling city.

They want to take a break from the madness of life and literally just chill out in the middle of nowhere.
If you own an RV, you know that life in the wild can be a bit rocky sometimes – to say the least! Basic needs like water and electricity are difficult to cater for when you are camping out all on your own.
So, if you fancy boondocking, you can read about some useful and important pointers here that will help you next time you take a walk on the wild side.

1. Electricity

No matter how long your camping trip is planned for, you will need some electricity at some point. Most modern RVs come equipped with generators; however, they can be very loud and disturb the very peace and quietness that you were craving. Don’t forget you came all the way leaving the noisy and dusty city behind you. You could take a solar panel that would be connected to the RV’s generator and make the most of the sunshine everyday by storing up electricity. This can be used during the night for cooking or heating. They are not too expensive.
The problem with using up the power is that you have to wait for the next day before you get any more. If it is raining – well, then you are really in trouble. So, you have to be clever and use the power sparingly otherwise your trip could turn very cold or be like a sauna very quickly. Boondocking is a challenging pastime at the best of times, so make sure you plan well. Of course, a long lasting battery could also help you out in an emergency for a while.

2. Water

Water is really priceless when camping in your RV. No doubt, you will be having a water tank in the RV. However, you do not know that it may leak or it could get finished during long, hot, thirsty days. You have to know how to keep a check on water and stick to a plan - using a low flow shower head that will help you save water
As far as drinking water is concerned, water purifiers, distillers and water filters will all be very useful. They can be bought for a good price from the right store. You can collect water at any lake or stream so you do not run out and then you can use your water distiller to purify it for drinking. Just be mindful of the power you are using to do the distilling and be efficient.

3. Trash

When camping in the wilderness, many people leave behind all their trash and no matter how hard other people try to clean up, some people just do not care. To avoid having a lot of trash, the best thing to do is to eat fresh fruit and vegetables. You can hit 2 birds with one stone here as fruits and veg are usually not heavily packaged. All these measures contribute to saving our environment and keeping our planet clean.
Make sure to clean up any leftover food to avoid critters and scavengers coming looking for human food which plays havoc with their diets.

4. Safety

Always remember that safety is of paramount importance when boondocking. Bear in mind, you are invading the space of wild animals, and they might not be too happy about it. Yes, most bad crime takes place in big cities, but you need to beware of the four-legged “criminals”……….
Here are some easy tips and tricks to keep safe:
·         Always have a flashlight available such as a loud foghorn is useful to scare off any straying animals.
·         And, most important – do not forget the bear spray…….
If you are really feeling uncomfortable with where you are, you can always pack up and leave – whew!
